Children's room is a place of fun and relaxation, however it fulfils its 'functions' only when it's planned and everything's in the correct order and place, sounds impossible? It really isn't. The success lies in you, the parent. Organising your little one's room, making each thing accessible and easy for them to reach, as well as encouraging them to tidy up on a regular basis will eventually become a norm to them - a routine, just like eating or brushing their teeth. Check out my mums top tips to keep my room tidy & organised and encourage me to keep it this way!
1. Well planned space...
Ensure that everything in your child's room has its own place, this will help and encourage your child to remember where to put their toys after they are done playing with them and also where to find specific toys. Mum has organised all of my smaller toys into plastic 4 drawers tower storage from Argos. Cars, people & dolls, animals, building blocks, cooking toys, dolls accessories etc... If you want your little human to keep their room tidy you have to make it easy and accessible for them ensuring all shelves/drawers are at their height level.
2. Get rid of any unnecessary things...
In children's bedroom or nursery there should only be room for things that they actually use or play with. Let's get rid of old toys and clothes that they grew out of because they just clutter up the room. Ring up your local charity to collect those unwanted items instead of chucking it all away. My mummy regularly puts some bigger toys away, and store them in a big container inside my wardrobe. Then swap them around every few weeks. The same thing applies to clothes - in summer, store away using vacuum storage bags - winter jackets and boots that take so much space, and in winter do the same with summer dresses, shorts and shoes.
3. Boxes and baskets...
Containers are the greatest weapons in the battle against clutter. If you strictly determine into which box to put away the building blocks, and in which basket the teddies live, your child will remember it easily start putting it back on their own. Take a look at this 4 tier basket storage unit. Baskets or boxes are the perfect solution for everything having it's own place, but little ones often forget about it. To make it even easier for them label individual container with relevant picture or text stickers.
4. Use the space under their bed/cot...
It is worth considering its maximum use. Your child will have an easy access to whatever's under there so make sure it's something they often play with such as board games or blocks.
5. Hangers and hooks...
They are ideal for toddlers like myself, who are too short to use a wardrobe just yet... If we place them at the correct height, they can learn to hang jackets, cardigans or dressing gowns back on their own.
6. Tiding up before bedtime...
Every evening before mummy baths me and puts to bed, together we go into my room and put away what ever needs to be. I normally do this on my own throughout the day, but there's always those few toys that didn't make it back to their home... If a child refuses, make it fun and exciting for them. The one that works best for me with my little stubborn self is 'Ohhh nooooooo mummy needs help, helpppp meeeeeeee pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase...' Yes act like a victim and make it dramatic. They will feel like heroes.
